lgbtq therapist | denver

Hi, my name is Briana Johnson and I’m an LGBT therapist in Denver.

You might be wondering if therapists who say they are “LGBTQIA-affirming” actually know anything about what you’re going through.

You might feel solid in your identity and that it has become a point of pride and connection with others or maybe you’ve never felt accepted in the LGBTQ community.

You might need your sexuality or gender to be a “non-issue” so you can focus on other needs because in the past you had to hide parts of yourself to get the help you needed.

You want a space where you, your partner or partners aren’t deadnamed, misgendered, or questioned.

I can help.

My approach to LGBT Therapy in Denver

If you’re wondering how this straight- and cis-passing white woman is going to help, that’s fair! I am a queer woman familiar with not always feeling “queer enough” for the community.

It was in grad school that I figured out I was queer and at the same time completed my internship working with transgender adults. I’ve spent the last 10 years addressing gender, sexuality, relationships, sex (and more!) with clients. I deeply value helping you live authentically and am open to the many directions you might go. I am an active guide, reflecting back what I hear and asking questions to help you clarify and grow.

Queerness, to me, is possibility. It’s sacred, creative, and allows us to reimagine our relationships and live boldly.

Queer and transgender people deserve competent care and sometimes what you need as a queer person is a safe place to talk about the rest of your life or heal from trauma. I don’t want queer folks to have to choose between healing, addressing their relationships/work life or being validated in their identities. I want them to have it all!

FAQ

  • I work with LGBTQ professionals in therapy on issues related to relationships, career/work, past trauma, identity, sex, etc. Our work can focus on your identities specifically or just provide a safe space for you to address other needs.

  • It’s awesome that you know what you need right now! Finding the right fit in therapy is paramount. If you know you’d like to work with a trans therapist, for example, I’d love to find you a referral to someone who holds that identity.

  • YES. I work predominantly with transgender and non-binary folks. We know that not every trans person fits the dominant narrative of experiencing gender dysphoria and desiring medical transition. We tailor our work to you and what you want, whatever that is. You get to determine your identity, your experience, and your journey for yourself.
